One of my charcoal studies, direct from the model. I like using charcoal as it allows for subtle tones, plus it's easy and direct to apply, without the complication of paint.
Done in the life class. As mentioned before, charcoal can be used in a very sensitive way, or, as this example shows, can be put to dramatic use. Strong contrasts between very light tone, through the very dark. I could also have added another medium to add even more dramatic effect to this study, the introduction to black ink for example.
